Master programme Alpine Natural Dangers / Watershed Regulation

Contents and focus of the degree programme:

The contents of the degree programme are oriented along the cycle of Integral Risk Management and thus include the contents of both the prevention of natural hazards and disasters and the coming to terms with them. The focus of the study programme, however, is on prevention. In different modules the analysis and appraisal of hazards and the planning of active protective measures are taught. For this purpose technical, biological and regional planning basics are combined in teaching. Graduates will qualify as experts in all issues of development and appraisal of protective measures in mountain regions.

Definition of the field of studies

Alpine Natural Dangers / Watershed Regulation deals with the protection from natural hazards in mountain regions. Technical, biological engineering or regional planning measures are to enable a permanent colonisation, sustainable management and touristic use of these areas.

Exams

The compulsory subjects will provide basic knowledge of the special ecosystem and the natural hazards management as such but also of the dealing with tools and methods of the subject such as geo-engineering, measuring, geographical information systems). Since the number of compulsory subjects is relatively low it is possible to specialise individually in specific modules in the areas of hazards (water, snow, avalanches, mass movement), integral catchment management and more general courses such as building management, protection forest management, provision for risks as well as handling of disasters. To complete the degree programme all required courses must have been marked by a pass grade and a master thesis must be written, which must be presented after its completion and be defended publicly in an academic professional discussion.
