Master programme Inclusive Education

Contents and focus of the degree programme:

The degree programme in Inclusive Education imparts subject-related basics enabling graduates to think in a reflected and academic way, to recognise interdisciplinary contexts and to work academically in an autonomous way, taking into account international developments. Graduates will be able to acquire scientific information related to the situation of people with handicaps, developmental disorders or problems with the upbringing, to classify it theoretically, to question it critically and to contribute to the development and assessment of measures in the education field. Students will gain basic skills in the field of “Diagnostics, prevention and intervention” and they will gain an insight into the possibilities and problems of the management in the framework of inclusive education institutions and projects. The medium of instruction is English and German.

Definition of the field of studies

The degree programme in Inclusive Education offers science-related and interdisciplinary oriented pre-professional education for a future occupation in research and practice fields in inclusive education for handicapped people and disadvantaged groups. Special emphasis is put on three aspects of the programme: Theory orientation, action orientation and research orientation.

Exams

The degree programme lasts four semesters and consists of the following modules: M A: Theory-related analysis of inclusive education models, processes and institutions, M B: Diagnostics and intervention in case of special upbringing and educational needs, M C: Action skills in inclusive education, M D: Research methods and their application, M E: Empirical research and evaluation, M F: General education / social pedagogy. Some courses are held in English, if this has been advertised beforehand. Moreover, students can choose between elective subjects (e.g. psychology, sociology, etc.) or they can do a subject-relevant work placement of a maximum of eight weeks corresponding to full-time employment within the framework of the elective subjects. Students also have to write a master's thesis. A study abroad semester is also possible.

Entrance examinations

The requirement for admission to the master’s programme is a bachelor degree in education or other subject-related bachelor degree or a universities of applied sciences bachelor degree or other equivalent degree from a recognised Austrian or non-Austrian postsecondary educational institution.
