Master programme Applied Cultural Science

Contents and focus of the degree programme:

The combination of cultural theory and methodology, cultural analysis and cultural comparison with practice-oriented activities is to guarantee a well-founded education in the field of inter- and transcultural communication and cultural management. The degree programme is organised as an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented programme and imparts linguistic, subject-related and theoretical qualifications for working in and between different cultures. The following core skills are taught: communication skills, methodological skills, international cultural relations, transdisciplinary cultural work, moderation and management skills. The master programme conveys in-depth specialist knowledge and the prerequisites for an academic career and consolidates, beside the relevant language skills, also the theoretical and practical knowledge that is required for work in various fields of the economy, politics and culture.

Definition of the field of studies

Applied cultural studies deal with the understanding of human action, its results and the creations of the human mind. Cultural studies are as a matter of principle organised in an interdisciplinary way.

Exams

The master programme consists of the compulsory subjects “Theories and methods of cultural studies” (focus: interdisciplinarity and interculturality), “Practice of cultural management” (focus: cultural production and reception of culture). Moreover elective subjects which have to be chosen from a list are offered: cultural studies practice and project organisation. The degree programme concludes with a master thesis and a master examination.
