Bachelor programme English and American Studies

Contents and focus of the degree programme:

The bachelor's programme in English and American Studies teaches basic knowledge and skills in the fields of linguistics (structures, functions, uses, varieties of the English language), literature studies (overview of literature in English, literature theories and methods of text analysis) and cultural studies (cultural context, cultural theories, intercultural skills, media skills). Moreover, students are taught important key qualifications for a future occupation, e.g. excellent written and oral skills, systematic application of systematic and creative problem resolution strategies, identification and analysis of contexts, autonomous academic working as well as project- and goal-oriented working in teams and last but not least the ability to act in an intercultural context. The medium of instruction is English and German.

Definition of the field of studies

The aim of the degree programme English and American Studies is to teach excellent skills in the active use of the English language.

Exams

The degree programme consists of five competence areas: basics, language mastery, linguistics, literature studies and cultural studies. Moreover, students have to study elective modules from the competence areas language mastery and cultural studies. A stay abroad in an English-speaking country of at least four months is strongly recommended. Moreover, two bachelor theses must be written in addition to the courses in which they are written.
