Contents and focus of the degree programme:

The bachelor's programme is a complex programme dealing with the language, cultures and literatures of the English-speaking countries. Students are taught relevant knowledge of the English language and its regional and supra-regional varieties and sophisticated cultural knowledge. Students will get a comprehensive insight into the various aspects of the interaction between language and culture and the manifold social, media-related and aesthetic aspects of linguistic forms of expression and creations. Moreover, analytical skills and key qualifications existing in all areas of social communication, language and culture teaching as well as in the areas of organisation and conception are required. The medium of instruction is English and German.

Definition of the field of studies

The aim of the degree programme in English and American Studies is to teach excellent skills in the active use of the English language.

Exams

The degree programme contains the modules of “elective subjects”, “academic working”, “literature studies”, “linguistics”, “cultural studies” and “language proficiency” and “practice-orientation”. It consists of a one-semester orientation period, which contains introductory courses and a placement test, an advanced phase lasting three semesters and a two-semester consolidation phase. It is recommended to study the elective subjects at a university abroad. The programme concludes with two bachelor's theses, a final exam and an examination about the subject.
