Master programme Biotechnology

Contents and focus of the degree programme:

This master’s programme is a combination of basic knowledge in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics and mathematics as well as application-oriented engineering sciences such as bioprocess engineering. The focus is on cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, nanobiotechnology, biotechnological substances production and transformation, bioprocess engineering, quality management and legal norms. The programme is very practice-oriented. Numerous exchange programmes, cooperations and courses in foreign languages contribute to an international environment.

Definition of the field of studies

Biotechnology is the integration of biosciences, chemistry and process engineering with the aim of technological use of organisms, cells and macromolecules for the processing, upgrading and treatment of biogenic raw materials for the production of materials for the benefit of society and the environment.

Exams

In the framework of the programme students must do a compulsory work placement in subject-related industrial enterprises or in non-university research, testing and examination institutions of altogether two months. The topic of the master’s thesis orients itself on a subject of the master’s programme and it will be supervised by the professors teaching the subject. The master’s examination consists of a pass grade on all required subjects and an oral examination before a committee (about the topic of the master’s thesis).
