Bachelor programme Biology

Contents and focus of the degree programme:

The bachelor's programme in biology at the Karl-Franzens University Graz imparts fundamental practical skills and theoretical knowledge in biology. The focus of the degree programme is on general and multidisciplinary requirements of scientific research in the disciplines of ecology, biodiversity research, evolution biology, plant, animal, and behavioural psychology and prepares students for occupations in biological research and development. Due to the broad spectrum of subjects no homogenous occupational profile for biologists can be established; this enables graduates to get an overview of a wide variety of research and occupational areas and qualifies them to work in one or more occupational areas, depending on their interests.

Exams

The bachelor's programme consists of six semesters, which include an orientation phase which serves an introduction and orientation of the students. Courses are offered in the form of lectures, exercise courses, conversatories, seminars and work placements. They enable a sound scientific basic education on a theoretical and practical level. To complete the degree programme successfully students have to pass examinations both from the compulsory courses and from compulsory groups of modules, which can be chosen by the students themselves. Moreover, students have to write a bachelor's thesis about a topic from the specialisation subjects. The professor who is responsible for the course has to approve the chosen topic. To increase mobility students are recommended to study specialisation subjects at universities abroad.
