Master programme Applied Linguistics

Content and focus of the degree programme:

The aim of the master programme is to gain key skills in the field of empirical text and discourse analysis which allow graduates to work independently on issues relevant for society in the fields of linguistic minorities research, language policy, linguistic prejudice research, linguistic organisation research, media communication, language teaching research and language learning research and to produce new findings. In contrast to graduates of the bachelor programme graduates will moreover be able to carry out independent scientific investigations and, should the situation arise, also carry out counselling activities in the above-mentioned focus areas.

Definition of the field of studies

The degree programme Applied Linguistics is an advanced education in different fields of application of linguistics relevant for society.


The programme lasts four semesters. It consists of five compulsory modules. Module four has to be chosen from either the field discourse analysis and sociolinguistics or language teaching research, language learning research and language policy. The degree programme is completed by a master thesis and an examination held before a committee.
