Master programme European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (JDP) (E) (IP)

Content and focus of the degree programme:

This degree programme concentrates on the application of quality and molecular genetics for animal breeding purposes. It mainly deals with the following four fields: Statistical genomics, molecular genetics and bioinformatics, planning and evaluation of breeding programmes and the understanding of inter-animal and biological correlations. Moreover there is a special compulsory subject for the learning of problem-oriented working methods. This usually takes place in small groups which approach and resolve specific problems by means of discussions and current information. The conservation of nature and the preservation of biodiversity are of highest priority for animal breeders. This well-founded and internationally-oriented knowledge will open doors all over the world for graduates; occupational fields range from common farm animal breeding to specialised fish farming. The medium of instruction is English.

JDP – Joint Degree Program

Definition of the field of studies

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (JDP) programme specialises in all aspects of breeding, husbandry and feeding of livestock.

An “Applied Period” is a compulsory work placement which students have to do in a national, transnational or international organisation. The aim of this is to get a first insight into the industry and the application of the theoretical knowledge in a real working environment. The master’s thesis is a scientific paper with a high international standard and serves to get a joint degree (degree consisting of two master’s degrees of two different universities). Thus the research work will be supervised by a professor of each of the two universities. A study period abroad is compulsory.
