Master programme Ancient History and Classical Studies

Content and focus of the degree programme:

The master programme Ancient History and Classical Studies embraces Greek history including pre- and early history of the Aegean area (Mycenaeology), Roman history and the history of the countries, peoples and cultures of Central and Western Europe, the Middle East and Egypt as part of the complete history of the antiquity as well as classical studies of the peoples and cultures related to this. Students will enhance their overview knowledge and general knowledge in ancient history and expand it with special knowledge in sub-disciplines of ancient history, classical studies and Mycenaeology. Based on an overview gained in the bachelor programme special knowledge is to enable critical analysis of ancient history- and classical studies-related developments. Apart from the ability to synthesise the host of ancient history-related information graduates will also gain the ability to relativize the picture of a one-dimensional targeted ancient history development. This includes critical discussion of theories and methods of academic working and classical studies research in general and the sources-critical interpretation and analysis of antique written, pictorial and other material documents.

Definition of the field of studies

The degree programme Ancient History and Classical Studies deals with research of history of the different cultures in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East.


The master programme consists of the core modules I, II and III “Ancient History and Classical Studies” as well as an excursion module, a master thesis and a master examination. Moreover compulsory elective subjects and elective subjects that can be chosen freely have to be studied. The topic of the master thesis can be chosen from a sub-division of the core subject or from a compulsory elective subject assigned to the core subject.
