The bachelor's programme in Geology provides academic pre-professional education in the core areas of geology, i.e. the study of the composition, geological structures and processes of the solid earth and its modifications throughout time. The qualification aim is in-depth knowledge of specific geological techniques and methods and their implementation in the geology subjects. Based on this fundamental knowledge working techniques for subjects of applied geology and geology-relevant geoinformatics are taught. Possible occupational fields for geologists are in nationally and internally active geosciences consulting offices, authorities, the petrol, mining and construction industry, tourism, nature and environmental protection, industrial and state research institutions, federal institutions, museums, universities of applied sciences and universities.

Definition of the field of studies

The Geology programme provides an introduction to the composition, characteristics, formation requirements and formation processes of the solid earth and its components – rocks and minerals – and provides academic pre-professional education for occupations in the field of geology.

The examination subjects of Basics of geology, biostratigraphy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geophysics, mineralogy and petrology, applied geology as well as basics of geological methods must be studied. The first part of the bachelor's examination consists of examinations in these subjects. The second part of the bachelor's examination consists of an examination before a panel in two of the following subjects according to the student’s choice: Basics of geology, General geology, Geological methods, Applied geology or Basics of geophysics. The main field of examination in the bachelor's examination before the Panel is the ability to integrate subject matters between the sub-areas of the chosen examination subjects. Students of the geology curriculum have to do a four-week work placement during their studies to identify possible occupational fields.
