The teacher training programme "Art Education" imparts educational, didactical, artistic and subject-specific academic contents and methods to prepare students for carrying out the profession of an arts teacher. The degree programme orients itself on the current state of research in the area of art education. Special importance is attached to the ability to spark an interest in adolescents in taking part in the cultural life. Key skills include the ability to plan and organise, observe and evaluate classroom teaching, knowledge and application of educational psychology and development psychology, teaching of subject-specific approaches to the perception of art and culture, the ability to recognise artistic potential and encourage the further development of it, knowledge of the basic concepts of art as well as skills regarding methods, approaches and issues of arts studies. Graduates will be qualified to teach arts at schools or to work in other fields of activity such as educating young people outside schools or adult education.

Additional information

Anzahl der ECTS entspricht 2 Unterrichtsfächern. Dabei sind je Unterrichtsfach aus Fachwissenschaften und Fachdidaktik 100 ECTS-Anrechnungspunkte und aus Bildungswissenschaften und Schulpraxis 40 ECTS-Anrechnungspunkte vorzusehen.

Definition of the field of studies

The art education curriculum concentrates on the role of visual and sensual perception, of art and culture in both past and present. The relationship between scientific theories and art, culture and education is of special importance.

Exams

The course is divided into two study sections. In the first study section students have to study the subjects didactics and school practice, academic subjects (history of art, media theory, architectural and environmental design), arts practice in a studio (painting, art design or sculpture) as well as courses at the department for teacher education, and do a teaching practice. The second study section covers the subjects of didactics and teaching practice (art education theory and didactic models, methods of art teaching, etc.), academic subjects (seminar in art studies, contemporary art, art experience and aesthetics in everyday life), arts practice in a studio (painting, art design, sculpture or new media) and a teaching practice. In one of the study subjects a scientific diploma project must be written.

Entrance examinations

To be eligible for the course prospective students must have successfully passed an artistic aptitude test.
